WELCOME TO THE SECOND LIGHTBOX FESTIVAL - FULL PROGRAMME
As part of the first LIGHTBOX festival in 2010, a round table discussion attended by filmmakers and students agreed that there was a need for an Irish Animation Festival. The group congratulated Cinema North West and The Model and “... called on them to make LIGHTBOX into an annual animation festival”. So we are back!
LIGHTBOX intends to reflect the strong position Irish animation holds both in the Irish film industry and the international animation scene. LIGHTBOX will be a space for animators, visual artists and live action filmmakers to come together with audiences and film fans to celebrate the wide diversity of animation.
This year’s feature films include: MY DOG TULIP, CHICO & RITA and MARY & MAX. Each one is unique in style and outlook. Among the short film programmes will be the first ever retrospective of FRAMEWORKS; the now famous series of animation administered by the Irish Film Board, The Arts Council and RTE.
For Children there will be an animation workshop and the Irish premier of KOOKY - based on the ‘true story’ of a lost toy finding his way home. KOOKY is a film for the children who love their toys and the parents who remember losing their own.
A ‘show and tell’ talk by three of Ireland’s animation practitioners - one of the most popular events last year, returns as a key element of LIGHTBOX. The animators formally known as DELICIOUS 9 will be in discussion about their former experience as a collective. Dublin’s DARKLIGHT festival will again introduce a programme of contemporary short animated film.
The festival will exhibit other visual arts practices employed in the animation process. This year we are showing animation puppets from award winning films and an exhibition of student Life Drawing - a first of its kind.
Plenty to watch - so come and see.
Steve Woods, Festival Director.
