Children's workshop on writing
by Colin Bateman
To mark the re-publication of Colin Bateman’s classic first children’s novel, ‘Running with the Reservoir Pups’, the author is undertaking a limited tour.

Colin Bateman is one of Northern Ireland’s best known writers. He is the award winning author of twenty crime novels, including Divorcing Jack, Mystery Man and I Predict A Riot. He has written extensively for film and created the long running BBC1 series Murphy’s Law. His stage play, National Anthem, was the sold-out hit of the Ulster Bank Belfast Festival in 2010. He was recently made an Honorary Doctor of Letters by the University of Ulster for his services to Literature.

Colin has published eight novels for children - the ‘Eddie and the Gang With No Name’ Trilogy, ‘Titanic 2020’ and its sequel, and three books in a new series, ‘The SOS Adventures’.

‘Running with the Reservoir Pups’ was acclaimed on its first publication in 2003.

This author’s hilarious, dark Northern Irish wit, penchant for action-packed mayhem, sense of irony and snappy dialogue are all evident in this outrageously comic caper,’ said the (US) School Library Journal.

A zany caper…innovative, far-fetched tale makes for great entertainment,’ said (US) Publishers Weekly.

THE BOOK

Running with the Reservoir Pups’ is the story of twelve year old Eddie Malone, a boy who has a bad habit of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now he’s gotten mixed up with the Reservoir Pups, the scrappy gang of boys who rule the streets in his new town. And why on earth has he agreed to break into the hospital his mum works at? It’s just Eddie’s luck that he quickly stumbles upon a kidnapping plan that implicates Scuttles, the hospital’s head of security – and his mum’s new boyfriend.

THE TALK

Each visit by Colin Bateman is made up of an inspirational talk about how important books and reading are, and how he became a writer. There is also a short reading from his new novel. This is followed up by a lively question and answer session, after which pupils can have their books signed by the author. The material is suitable for 8-12 year olds

This will take the form of a short talk, reading and then a question and answer session focussing on creative writing, film and journalism.
